A Giveaway of Organic Goodness

Hey guys.  Just popping in to say hi on this last weekend of summer (!!!!).  How the heck?  Time is a flying, that's for sure.  Things are still bonkers busy in my reality so this post contains no recipes (check my Portfolio Page for current updates of stuff I've been working on, and I'm super eager to write here soon about cookbook stuff!).  I have good news though!  There's a chance for you to win a box full of organic goodness!  I don't do this sort of thing very often - I think the only items I've ever given away are cookbooks written by friends - but when Nature's Path contacted me about giving away a box of awesome stuff to one of you lucky readers to celebrate National Organic Week happening September 19th -27th, I wanted to say yes.  Many of the products in the box are in my pantry already, so it seemed like a natural fit for me to partner with them.  And, who doesn't love a box of delicious food arriving on your doorstep?

I don't want to get into the whole organic vs. non-organic debate here; I think ultimately we make the best choices we can to feed ourselves and our families.  I always buy organic and fair trade coffee and tea; sugar and chocolate too if it's in the budget.  That being said, I do try to find out where my food comes from, who's growing it and what's in it.  I talk to the farmers who grow my potatoes and carrots (Hi Wally and Gail!); the folks who drive the fruit I love out from B.C.  Heck, I even had tea with a lovely local man who has an orchard of cherries and in turn dries them into a beautiful product.  I love local, always and forever.  I was fortunate to go on a series of farm tours a couple of weeks ago with other chefs and food writers, and after seeing a dairy farm, egg processing plant and a grain farm, I'm confident that the food Saskatchewan farmers are producing to feed not only me, but the rest of the world, is created with the utmost care and attention to safety and nutrition.  If you ever get a chance to tour a working farm, go for it.  You'll be amazed at what you'll learn.  Farmers are just so darn awesome.

  1. I buy pretty much everything I possibly can organic. Milk, yogurt, fruit (except the fresh BC stuff at the farmer's market! So sad no peaches this week.), veg, various canned products . . . sometimes even wine! :-)

  2. Ooh yum! This basket looks incredible! I buy all of my beef, chicken and eggs organic regularly. When I can, any other meats. Veggies and fruit are easy to find here in the Okanagan valley so 95% of these are also organic.

  3. I always buy the "dirty dozen" organic as well as flour and bananas. I try hard on everything else depending on the price point.

  4. i buy almost all of our groceries at the saskatoon farmers' market. anything i don't buy there is carefully checked so that i can make the choice for local (or as close to local as possible) and organic. the food we eat makes such an enormous difference to our health and to our world that it is worth the little bit of extra care and attention! 8. We try to buy almost everything organic, but focus especially on fresh produce. I also find it very difficult to choose between local and organic. Often during the summer, local and ethically grown produce is the clear winner. Thanks for this opportunity!

  9. I try to buy produce and fruit I'm going to eat simply or raw organic -- I just figure the taste and quality might be better so the true flavor of the produce can shine. Also, since I'm not a huge meat eater anyway, I try and only buy organic/free range/wild meat!

  10. We try to buy most produce organic (especially if it's going to be eaten raw or in a simple recipe -- figuring the flavor is usually better) and since I'm not a big meat eater anyway, we only buy organic/free range/wild/etc meat products!

  11. we parent kids with medical issues and i learned early on that diet is crucial! i bake/make most of our products from scratch, but what i can't make, i buy locally (when i can) and organically (as i can afford). it makes a difference and the higher price is almost always worth it :-)

  13. I buy Nature's Path cereals and oatmeals, we love Crofter's jams. I buy some fruits/vegetables organic as I can afford such as carrots, mushrooms, berries and bananas. During the summers we go to the farmer's market frequently instead of going to the grocery store for our fresh produce needs.

  15. I buy all our meat and chicken organic - I have finally come to realize the benefits in organic meat and veggies. I find the veggies are out of our price range, and hope the cost of organic veggies comes down in the near future. You can reach me at kelly@cogeco.ca

  16. I sometimes buy organic meat and vegetables. The stores here don't have a whole of organic products and what they do have is so expensive. I buy if it is marked down or on clearance.
